Hello 3F Families,
Happy November! I hope you have had a wonderful week! Here are some quick updates for our class: 🦖 Dinosaur Museum Virtual Field Trip Our virtual field trip with the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum on Wednesday was a great success! We participated in the Grade 3 Geology Rocks program which reviewed and expanded on all of the important concepts we learned about in science class. It was a great way to wrap up our exciting study of rocks and minerals! 📸 Here are a few photos of our virtual field trip: https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/photos.html 🌎 Social Studies - Peru In Grade 3 Social Studies, we have the exciting opportunity to learn about four unique and interesting countries - Peru, India, Ukraine, and Tunisia! Learning about other countries is extremely beneficial for young students. They gain an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and traditions, and also develop their global citizenship skills at the same time! We have started learning all about Peru this week! We focused on Peru’s geographic location, flag, national symbols, land forms, and climate. We will also be learning about Peru’s rainforest, animals, celebrations, fashion, food, music, dance, and transportation in the coming weeks. Ask your kiddo to tell you some fun facts about Peru that they learned this week! Here’s a short travel video that we watched as a class to see some of the cool things that make Peru so unique, such as ancient ruins, colourful clothing, salt mines, llamas, and sand boarding! 💻 Let’s Go - Peru Video Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6a9F4bcyjk&list=PL8tqWx1iNnlPtC7wg85DMYe181SJIZLqv&index=2&ab_channel=BeautifulDestinations 🎨 Art - Today we created beautiful paintings for Remembrance Day. 📚 Virtual Book Fair - November 23 - December 7 Link: https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5149786 📚 Scholastic Book Orders: https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/book-orders.html Online Scholastic Digi-Flyer - www.scholastic.ca/rc/digiflyer Order Online - www.scholastic.ca/clubshop 3F Class Order Code - RC174436 📅 Important Upcoming Dates: https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/class-info.html 🍂 November Wednesday 11th - Remembrance Day - No School Friday 20th - PL Friday - No School for Students Monday 23rd - Munchalunch - Boston Pizza -Order Link: munchalunch.com/schools/riverstone Thursday 26th - Crazy Sock Day Friday 27th - Term 1 Report Cards Published Monday 30th - Virtual Parent-Teacher Interviews @ 5:00-8:00 PM ⛄ December Wednesday 2nd - Virtual Parent-Teacher Interviews @ 4:00-7:00 PM Friday 4th - Day in Lieu of Parent-Teacher Interviews - No School Friday 11th - PL Friday - No School for Students Monday 14th - Munchalunch - Pita Pit -Order Link: munchalunch.com/schools/riverstone Friday 18th - Last Day Before Christmas Break -Pajama Day & Pancake Breakfast Friday 25th - Merry Christmas! I hope you have had a wonderful week so far and are doing well. We have all officially had to bust out our snowsuits and shovels and embrace the recent snowfall! Even though we haven’t even had Halloween yet, it’s already beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! ⛄ 📚 Here are some quick learning updates for our class: 📘 Math - We are continuing to strengthen our place value skills with 3 digit numbers. Our main focus continues to be on practicing how to represent numbers in standard form, expanded form, picture form/base ten blocks, and written form/number words. 📙 Language Arts - We are continuing our daily balanced literacy routine of printing practice, reading comprehension skill development, grammar review, and focused writing time. We are focusing on opinion writing right now. So far, students have written about their opinions on the best breakfast, the coolest animal, the best vacation destination, and whether or not they think kids should have chores. Ask your child what their opinions were on these topics, as well as their reasons to support their point of view. 📗 Science - We have completed our interactive file folder lapbooks that organize all of our key concepts about rocks and minerals. We have explored the layers of the earth, the three types of rocks, the rock cycle, the various rock properties that we can observe and test, and so much more! We even got to brainstorm our very own rock designs and write about where we found them and the properties that described them. Thank you to everyone who has sent in their rock collection photos so far. It has been very exciting to show and share some personal collections with the class! ⭐ Special Announcement - As we all know, this year is very different than most and we are having to rethink the way we do a lot of things. Unfortunately, we are unable to go on regular field trips at this time. In the spirit of reimagining how these kinds of experiences could happen instead, I have been collaborating with the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum and am excited to announce that we will be attending a live virtual field trip via video conference with an educator from the dinosaur museum! This will be an exciting opportunity to expand our knowledge about geology and learn from someone who has dedicated their career to this field! I announced this exciting news to the class today and we are all really looking forward to our virtual field trip on Wednesday, November 4th in the afternoon. 📅 Important Upcoming Dates 🎃 October Friday 23rd - PL Friday - No School for Students Monday 26th - Munchalunch - McDonalds -Order Link: munchalunch.com/schools/riverstone Friday 30th - Halloween Celebration -Munchalunch - Halloween Sugar Cookies Saturday 31st - Happy Halloween! 🧦Dignity Drive Donations of new socks and underwear can be sent to school anytime for the remainder of the month. Happy Friday! Here are some quick updates and reminders for our class before we begin our Thanksgiving long weekend full of family, friends, and food! 🦃 I have included several class website links throughout this update that you can click to see more. Please note that our class website is best viewed on a computer, or you can also scroll to the bottom and press "Version: Web" to improve the formatting on your phone. 📘 Math - Place Value https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/math.html We have started reviewing and strengthening our place value skills during our math block. We will be practicing how to represent 2 and 3 digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, picture form/base ten blocks, and written form/number words. We will be ensuring that we record our numbers carefully to help us recognize how the placement represents the value of each digit. Developing these essential number sense skills will set the foundation for success with 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction strategies later on in the year. Representing Numbers Example: Standard Form: 364 Expanded Form: 300 + 60 + 4 = 364 Written Form/Number Words: three hundred sixty-four Picture Form/Base Ten Blocks: 🚀 Math Blasters Basic Facts Program https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/math-blasters.html We have been incorporating some daily practice time into our math block to help increase our basic math facts accuracy and fluency. This week we completed our 0 facts and next week we will be working on our 1 facts. These first few sets of basic facts should be very easy and quick for your child as they are a review of basic math skills from previous years. Our first goal is accuracy (answering correctly) and our second goal is fluency (answering quickly). Strengthening and solidifying our basic facts recall is a priority as we will be moving onto higher level mathematical skills that require accurate and efficient computation skills. Thank you for your support at home! 📗 Science - Rocks & Minerals https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/science.html We started off our new science unit by creating clay models of the Earth on Monday! If you have not already, please ask your child how they made it and what each layer of the Earth is called. We have been learning how geologists sort rocks into the 3 main categories - igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. We will also be learning more about how to describe rocks and minerals using property words, such as shape, size, colour, texture, luster, hardness, and so on. We have started to create a rocks and minerals lapbook (interactive file folder) to organize and highlight key concepts and vocabulary that we are learning. If you or your child have any special rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, or related collections to share, feel free to take some close up photos and email them to me. If you are able to, please include any additional information such as what they are called, where they are from, etc. Your child can then show and share their photos with the class next week. Thank you in advance for anything you have to share with our class! We have a very excited and curious class of junior geologists in 3F! 👕 Riverstone School Clothing Orders - Due October 31st https://riverstoneschool2020.itemorder.com/sale Parent Council can assist with any questions you may have. Happy October! Today we welcomed a new month by creating beautiful pastel pumpkins during our art time. We learned how to layer and blend different colours to give our pumpkins texture and dimension. Everyone was very proud of their pumpkin! 🎃 📊 Math - This week, we have continued to work on our graphing skills. Students are increasing their ability to accurately organize data into a graph and explain their observations about the data. 📝 Language Arts - During our literacy time, we are continuing to focus on daily reading, writing, and grammar skills. We practice daily reading in many ways - reading to self, reading in small groups (book clubs), listening to reading (read alouds), and working on reading comprehension skills as we read. At this point in time, there will not be a formal reading log for tracking nightly reading, however daily home reading is still strongly encouraged. Just 20 minutes a night will make a massive difference over the course of a school year. If you think your child would benefit from recording their nightly reading minutes, I recommend using the school calendar pages in the student agenda for a simple tracking option. I appreciate any and all reading support you can provide at home! 🌏 Social Studies - We used our mapping skills to design our very own unique and creative "Imagination Islands" this week! Ask your child about their island and what they decided to include in their key/legend. ✔️ Friendly Reminder - School Engage Online Forms Due There are still a few families in our class who have not logged in and updated their digital forms. These very important forms are required so students can have access to their Google accounts, take part in photos, and so we have the most up to date contact information. September is flying by! We have been busy setting the stage for success this year in many ways. We have had many opportunities to share about ourselves and learn about each other which has helped to strengthen our classroom community. We are getting into routines and learning classroom and school expectations to help us be role models. We have been focusing on having a positive attitude and a growth mindset. With all these important foundational skills in place, we are sure to have a wonderful year together! 😊 🍎 Learning Updates Here are some quick updates about what we have been focusing on in class lately: 📊 Math - Graphing We have started our year off with our data and graphing unit in math. We have been busy collecting data (information), building various types of graphs (bar graphs and line plots), and interpreting the data to form observations and conclusions about our graphs. We have completed many class surveys and created graphs together that organize our data about some of our favourite things! 📚 Language Arts - Reading & Writing Skills We have been working on many different skills during our literacy time! We are engaging in daily reading time with our classroom library books and have been signing out home reading books from our school library each week. We have explored various reading options on our class website, including RAZ Kids, Epic Books, and Teach Your Monster To Read! Copies of your child's login cards have been sent home this week. All of the website links and class codes can be found on our class website as well. We have also been reviewing important writing habits, such as proper printing, capitals, and punctuation. Our daily writing practice has included journal writing and how-to writing skills. We are focusing on the importance of writing steps and instructions in a logical order with clear details. We are using words like “first, next, then, last” to provide order to our writing. Challenge your child to write instructions for an activity at home, such as a chore, recipe, craft, or game. 🌏 Social - Map Skills We have been learning about where we belong in the world by exploring our school, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and so on! We have been comparing maps and globes, learning about continents and oceans, as well as using the compass rose to determine directions! Google Maps is a great way to explore our world and see how neighbourhoods, cities, provinces, and so on are related! We have been enjoying virtual field trips while we practice our mapping skills and learn more about our world. Try helping your child explore and explain where they live on Google Maps, and maybe even go for a trip somewhere special! 🔎 Science - Rocks & Minerals Coming Soon! In Grade 3, we alternate months learning about Social and Science. In September, we start with Social Studies and then move onto Science in October, and then back and forth each month from there. We really find this helps students manage and retain all of the concepts and vocabulary for each unit of study. Our first Science unit will be all about Rocks & Minerals! Stay tuned! 🎨 Art - Check out our fabulous fall paintings that we created today! 📸 More class photos can be found here: https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/photos.html 📋 School Engage Form Updates A friendly reminder from the School Office - registration update forms are now available online. Library books will be due the following Monday or Tuesday so we can sign out new books during our next library block. It is my hope that these library books will provide additional selection for both independent and shared reading at home. The Grande Prairie Public Library is also an amazing place to help broaden your child’s home reading selections! I have uploaded a “Parent’s Guide to Reading” resource to our class website here: grade3ferguson.weebly.com/parent-resources. It will help to clarify various aspects of literacy skills and provide strategies to support your child’s reading even further at home! Thank you in advance for your support with reading at home! It makes a tremendous difference! 💻 Website Resources - I have started to set up a way for families who are sick/isolating/home for whatever reason to still have access to some of the concepts and activities we are learning about in class. For now, I am going to be putting some digital copies of student workbooks and materials on our 3F class weebly website. You don't need to print anything or send any written work back to school, as we want to avoid passing materials back and forth between home and school as much as possible, especially if your child is symptomatic. You can access and view the documents from our class website and use them for practice and skill building while isolating at home. I will keep it all relevant and up to date with what we are focusing on in class. There are also many other links throughout our website to online resources and games, such as Epic Books, Tumble Books, etc. I am sure this system will evolve and improve as we go, but we will start with it for now. Here are the main links: https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/literacy-learning.html https://grade3ferguson.weebly.com/numeracy-learning.html 🏃 Gym - Our class has gym first block in the mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We also have gym last block in the afternoon on Mondays and Wednesdays. Gym will be taught outside the majority of time, unless extreme weather conditions occur. As the fall weather continues to change, please ensure your child is dressed in layers to adapt to the fluctuations in temperature throughout the day. Thank you! I hope you have a fantastic weekend! 😊 Hello 3F Families!
