Week two of grade 3 has flown by! We have been setting the stage for success this year in many ways. We have had many opportunities to share about ourselves and learn about each other which has helped to strengthen our classroom community. We are getting into routines and learning classroom and school expectations to help us be role models. We have been focusing on having a positive attitude and a growth mindset. With all of these important foundational skills in place, we will have a wonderful year together!
I sent home a few important notes throughout the week. I do my best to send digital copies of the paper notes that I send home as well.

📝 Ravens Gear Clothing Order Form
We finally met Rocky the Raven today during our morning assembly!
Ask your child to tell you all about him! 😊
🎨 Friday Passion Clubs
Students in grades 3 -5 have been given a special opportunity for the last hour of all Friday afternoons. All students had the chance to choose a club that they are interested in and will get to attend that club for the remainder of this term. They will get to experience 3 different clubs in total this year! Some of the clubs include drawing, colouring, clay creations, comic book making, music, dancing, yoga, gym games, board games, coding, and more! Ask your child what club they are in for this round!
📊 Math - Graphing
We are starting our year off with our data and graphing math unit. We are collecting data (information), building various types of graphs (bar graphs, line plots, etc) and interpreting the data to form observations and conclusions about our graphs. We have created graphs about our favourite ice cream flavours, animals, field trips, and more!
📚 Language Arts
We have been starting many exciting things during our literacy time! We are engaging in daily reading time and have started signing books out of our school library. Students may sign out 3 books every Tuesday and they are due every Monday. We have also explored various reading options on our class website, including RAZ Kids, Epic Books, and Teach Your Monster To Read! Copies of your child's login cards have been sent home this week. All of the website links can be found on our class website.
We have been reviewing important writing habits, such as proper printing, capitals, and punctuation. We are also starting to learn how to use word sort activities to help us develop our spelling skills. We will be sorting words according to their rules (example: short 'e' and long 'ee'/'ea'). Once we are all trained on the daily activities, students will have individualized word sort lists to help them develop at their skill level. Please stay tuned for more information on how you can support at home.
🌏 Social - Map Skills
We have been learning about where we belong in the world by exploring our school, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and so on! We will be comparing maps and globes, learning about continents and oceans, as well as using the compass rose to determine directions! Google Maps is a great way to explore our world and see how neighbourhoods, cities, provinces, and so on are related! Help your child explore and explain where they live on Google Maps.
🔎 Science
In Grade 3, we alternate months learning about Social and Science. In September, we start with Social Studies and then move onto Science in October, and then back and forth each month from there. We really find this helps students manage and retain all of the concepts and vocabulary for each unit of study. Our first Science unit will be all about rocks and minerals! Stay tuned!
