I hope you are enjoying your Family Day long weekend!
We had a blast celebrating friendship on Valentine's Day by exchanging cards and treats.
We also acknowledged the 100th day of school this past week! I am so proud of the hard work and growth that the kiddos have showed during the first half of the school year.
We have been following the Olympics as a school and will have the opportunity to listen in to a Classroom Champions video chat with athletes next week!

Science
In Science, we have been putting our engineering skills to the test with further pillar testing, as well as arch building and testing. Ask your kiddo about what they have learned from building and testing these structures. What makes a structure strong and stable? What makes a structure weak and unstable?

Math
In Math, we are currently practicing the break it down (expanded form) strategy to solve 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction equations. This strategy helps students to clearly see the place value of each number during the addition and subtraction process. Providing an organized and visual structure while students are first learning multi-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping is essential in deepening their understanding of number. In Grade 3, many strategies are taught such as drawing visual base ten, breaking it down into expanded form, hundreds charts, and open number lines so students can strengthen their number sense and find a strategy that works for them. We do practice using the traditional algorithm method once students have learned the other strategies so they have a stronger understanding of what is happening to the numbers as they are regrouped. Ask your kiddo to show you an example and explain their process.
