I hope you are enjoying the actual spring weather that we are finally receiving!
Here are some updates for our class.
Learning Updates:
📘 Math - We have been exploring and refining our basic multiplication skills with flashcards, games, and strategy practice. We will be applying our multiplication knowledge when we begin exploring related division facts. We think about multiplication as "groups of" and now we will be thinking about division as "shared equally." Our main strategies are related. For example, when we multiply, we skip count forwards. For division, we will now skip count backwards. When we multiply, we use repeated addition. For division, we will now use repeated subtraction. We are still able to draw pictures, models, and arrays to help us visually see our problem solving.
📝 Writing - We have been experimenting with the technique of building suspense in our story writing. As we read through various mentor texts, we are looking for clues that the author is using to build up to something big and important.
Today, we wrote our own suspenseful paragraph which was leading up to discovering a dragon in a cave. The kiddos did an amazing job generating their very own sensory clues, such as deep roaring, billowing smoke, claw scratches on the ground, and scaly skin. Ask your child to share with you what they wrote! 🐲
🐛 Science - The zoologists of 3F have been fully immersed in the study of animal classifications and life cycles! We learned all about the butterfly life cycle this week and have learned some interesting scientific facts about metamorphosis and the changes that occur throughout the four stages. Our trained zoologists are now ready for their very own research mission. Next week, we will begin a research project where each student will have the opportunity to study an animal in great detail. The end product will be a research fact file folder that details the behaviour, adaptations, habitat, diet, life cycle, and fun facts about their animal! 📁

📖 April Reading is Giving Challenge - ACCOMPLISHED! 🎁
This month’s theme was “Reading is Giving!” We had the opportunity to submit our reading total of 100 books as a class to Scholastic and they are now donating books on our behalf to help build libraries for schools and children in need. There is no greater reward than giving to others! I am so proud of how enthusiastic our class was towards achieving this generous goal!
📚 May Home Reading Program Goal ⛅
For the month of May, we have an individual home reading goal! We are asking that each student reads for at least 15 nights or more by Wednesday, May 30th, 2018. Please record the minutes on the May calendar page in your agenda. The students who meet their goal will have an opportunity to earn free time outside! Don’t miss out on the fun in the sun!
I will be out of town on Friday this week. A substitute teacher will be filling in for me for the day. I have let the class know this and we have been discussing expected and unexpected behaviour for when a guest teacher is visiting. If you have any messages for Friday, such as appointments or early pickups, please let me know as soon as possible so I can have the information forwarded to my substitute.
Thank you & take care! 😊
